jumping womanRaymond "Ray" Clarence Ewry was born on Oct 14, 1873, in Lafayette, Indiana. After a childhood spent in a wheelchair partially paralysed with polio, he went on to become one of the best ever standing jump champions.

In this discipline he won the standing long jump, high jump and triple jump at the Olympics in 1900, 1904, 1906, and 1908. He won a total of eight gold medals at official Olympic Games and two golds at the "Intercalated Games" (1906 in Athens).

Ewry died on October 1, 1937 in Long Island, New York, United States.

Records

  • Ewry won the standing long jump and the standing high jump in 1900, 1904, 1906, and 1908 Olympic Games.
  • He set the world record for the standing high jump of 1.65 m on July 16, 1900.
  • He set a world record for the standing long jump of 3.47m (11.4 ft) on September 3, 1904. This record was still standing when the event was discontinued internationally in the 1930s.
